Seven Strategies To Help you Keep Your New Year's Resolution

1. Know Your Purpose: For a resolution to become a habit, it has to go along with your values. Make a resolution that really connects with you. In other words, feel truly passionate about the goals you set for yourself. Set resolutions that give you a deeper sense of purpose.

2. Have a Plan: Once you have decided on a resolution break it down to a more specific one. Write it down in a way in which you can track your success. For example, let’s say your resolution is to lose 10 pounds. First, congratulate yourself on taking that first step to committing to a healthier you. Next, set up the “how” of your goal. Take out your agenda and schedule time to exercise. Take a list to the grocery store of ingredients to specific healthy recipes. Lastly, practice patience; the weight is not going to drop in the first two weeks. However, you will likely see a difference in a few months by staying consistent, true, and specific.

3. Write it Down: We know anyone can write down their resolutions on a piece of paper and stick it in a drawer for the rest of the year, but that will get us nowhere. Here is an idea instead of a piece a paper - buy a journal, write down your resolutions, then keep track of your successes. Write how you feel daily, and write affirmations to motivate yourself to keep you on track. See the smaller results as a reminder for the end result.

4. Create the Right Environment: Create an environment to support your success. Share your resolutions to a cheer squad among your family and friends; they can hold you accountable, give ideas, and most importantly support your success. On the other hand there are probably people in your life that you do not want to share with, because if you do, they will just try to talk you out of sticking to your resolution. You’ve already decided your resolution is valuable to you in your life, so stay clear of all Debbie Downers.

5. Prioritize your Resolutions: I want to encourage you to try to minimize the number of resolutions you take on. Start with a smaller number rather than a larger; it will make it easier for you to be successful. Remember to only pick the ones that are most valuable to you. In this case, choose quality over quantity.

6. Enjoy the Journey While Getting to the Goal: When your efforts are not producing, make sure to set mini goals in between. For example, if your goal is to run a half marathon, enjoy your accomplishments of one mile, then five miles, all the way to your final goal. Life is too short not to enjoy the present moment and the journey to your resolution.

7. Fail to Get Ahead: Your roadblocks and failures WILL NOT define your success in the year ahead. “HOW YOU RESPOND WILL.” If you happen to miss a day at the gym, or spend a little too much money on a pair of shoes, don’t beat yourself up about it. “Life rewards those who work at it.”
